Demar Dotson signs development agreement with Dickey's

New location in Rancho Santa Margarita

TAMPA — Demar Dotson, an offensive lineman for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 2009, plans to open a Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in the Tampa area later this year.
 
After his initial location in Tampa, Dotson plans to open more Dickey’s throughout the South, primarily in his home state of Louisiana, according to a release. In his retirement, Dotson plans to run the day-to-day operations of his stores and be the face of his community’s Dickey’s Barbecue Pit after he retires, the release adds.
 
Dotson has played in 89 games at offensive tackle and started 65 since the Buccaneers signed him as free agent in 2009. “I wanted to open a restaurant where I could fulfill my passion while also feeding my community pit-smoked barbecue,” says Dotson in the release.

Tampa Bay's Demar Dotson signs with Dickey's

The Commerce Chamber of Commerce celebrated the expansion of business in the community with two ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the new gym, Commerce Fitness, and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, under new ownership.
“I like it, I like it,” Dickey’s owner, Aaron Byrd said. “I like ribbon cuttings because it gives you a chance for everyone to come out.” 

The ceremony began at 12 p.m. at the strip mall next to Braum’s with Commerce Fitness and ended next door at Dickey’s.
“It’s a lot different,” first-time owner Byrd said. “I don’t want to say [it’s] a little more pressure…”
Byrd hopes that the ceremony will signal a new chapter for the restaurant as he works to improve the restaurant’s image.
“I think the main thing is the reputation before, that I’ve heard…,” he said.
Byrd has ideas he aspires to implement to make the business successful and known around the area.
“There’s a lot of stuff,” he said. “Just getting out and making sure people know we’re open and trying to work closely with the university. I have some stuff working with the athletic department already, and making sure, you know, we’re benefiting the students as well.”
As for Commerce Fitness, the family owned and operated gym was put together in about two months and was opened on Jan. 14 by owners Chad and Julie Gentle.
“We try to give back to everyone in the community,” Julie said. “We have classes for the kids, Zumba on the weekends for free, we reach out to the seniors…”
The idea of a having and running a gym had been a dream for the couple.
“Literally one day Chad was sitting at Braum’s and somebody mentioned that this building was available and he thought ‘Uh, I can’t afford that,’” Julie said. “I’m like ‘Just call,’ and just that one phone call changed everything, and it just put a series of events into motion and here we are eight weeks later. It’s just surreal.”
The couple acquired the building in early Nov. and put in work to get it open.
“We worked from –we got the key Nov. 10 and we worked frantically,” she said. “We did all the construction ourselves; my husband, my son-in-law, and myself.”
With the gym having been open for almost three weeks, the owners have ideas planned for the future of the gym.
“We’re talking about bringing powerlifting shows, cross training shows, we’re hoping to bring people from other states…,” Julie said.
The couple envisions that the gym can be something beneficial to the Commerce community.
“Well, I think it’s going to be big for Commerce because we’re reaching out to a whole different dynamic of people,” Julie said. “It’s going to be a staple of Commerce. It’s just going to be the place to go. It’s going to be the hangout.”

Two new eateries are about to reinvigorate the 25th Street Shopping Center's restaurant lineup, which already includes hotspots such as Jimmy's Hot Dogs, New York Bagels &amp; Deli, Antonio's Ice Cream &amp; Pizza and last month's addition, cooked-to-order chicken chain Wing Stop. &nbsp;&nbsp;
 
First, husband and wife Jose and Nilda Pinargote are set to open Adobo Latin Kitchen Feb. 13 in the space betwen Smokin' Joe's Tobacco Shop, Inc. and China Wok Asian Cuisine.
 
According to a news release from Lehigh Financial Group, which helped the couple arrange financing for the operation, Adobo will offer authentic Hispanic and Spanish food.
 
The Pinargotes, who have a Puerto Rican background, are aiming to attract a diverse clientele interested in "authentic Puerto Rican comfort food" in a friendly environment.
 
"Our menus will be in English with Spanish translations and we designed the place for a fast, casual-dining experience," said Jose Pinargote, who is a co-owner of Pints &amp; Pies, a pub on Northampton Street in Wilson.
 
Second, the Lehigh Valley's third Dickey's Barbecue Pit should open the first week of March in the free-standing building that previously housed Muscle Maker Grill, according to owner Ken Lynch, who also operates the three-year-old Stroudsburg Dickey’s.
 
Mostly cosmetic renovations will include new white subway tile on the walls and wood veneer flooring.
 
Lynch of Bangor also plans to designate a carry-out parking area where patrons can park their vehicles to easily pick up online orders.
 
Dickey’s menu highlights include homestyle sides such as barbecue beans, cabbage slaw and bacon and onion green beans; and smoked-on-site meats such as chicken, pork ribs and Stroudsburg’s best-seller, beef brisket.
 
“Out here, on the East Coast, everybody and their brother does pulled pork,” Lynch said. “Beef brisket is a Texas specialty that you can mess up pretty easily.”
 
The 72-seat Palmer spot also will offer some menu items not found at all Dickey’s restaurants.
 
Unique finds will include Fancy Pork and Racetrack sandwiches, as well as a Smokestacks dish, or macaroni and cheese topped with beef brisket.
 
Hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. everyday, Lynch said.
 
Grand opening specials, offered the first four weeks after opening, will include Philanthropic Fridays, when uniformed first responders receive 50 percent off their meals; and Singer-Songwriter Saturdays, when live music is featured. Three guests also will win free barbecue for a year.
 
Specials throughout the year will include children eating free on Sundays (with one adult meal purchase totaling $10 or more) and 10 percent off purchases for customers in uniform, including military members and Boy Scouts.
 
In Stroudsburg, Lynch and his wife, Kathleen, regularly donate chicken, turkey, sausage, baked potatoes and other food leftover at the end of the day — totaling about 2,000 pounds a year — to the Monroe County Homeless Initiative. At the Palmer restaurant, the couple intends to partner with Safe Harbor Easton.
 
Other area Dickey’s are in Bethlehem and Lower Macungie Township.
 
Adobo and Dickey's will join the shopping center's other new addition, Wingstop, which opened in January in the space that previously housed Maryland Fried Chicken.
 
Operated by Yogesh Patel, Palmer's Wingstop serves traditional and boneless wings as well as strips — all sauced and tossed in 11 original flavors, including fan favorites such as Mango Habanero, Garlic Parmesan and Original Hot.
 
Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight everyday.

Many know a plethora of restaurants find a home in Dothan, but a disparity exists between which sides of the city you can find them.
 
Eateries – as well as neighborhoods and stores – are more densely concentrated on the northern and western sides of town. That means people like me who live on the southern and eastern sides often have to travel 10 to 20 minutes (in heavy traffic) to dine at our favorite spots.
 
Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, located near Southeast Alabama Medical Center, could change that after three friends and I had a pleasurable experience there recently.
 
Food
 
I met my friends Bryan, Ryan and Meredith after church one Sunday since all four of us either live or attend church on that side of Dothan. Ryan has visited the establishment before, while Bryan, Meredith and I were newcomers.
 
Dickey’s offers several different options, from sandwiches to plates to barbecue baked potatoes. Ryan immediately ordered a half-pound of smoked chicken ($6.48) and a half-pound of jalapeno cheddar sausage ($4.95).
 
I followed with an intriguing order – The Westerner ($6.49) – a beef brisket sandwich topped with a Polish kielbasa and cheddar. I paired it with a side of baked potato casserole ($2.25) and a large sweet tea ($2.50).
 
Bryan noted he was not extremely hungry, so he opted for the Beefy Mac ($6.99) and a small drink ($1.50).
 
Meredith ordered the giant baker ($7.95), a barbecue baked potato that she topped with pulled pork. The baked potato usually comes with cheddar, sour cream and green onions, but Meredith asked for those items to be removed.
 
Ryan thought the smoked chicken provided good flavor, especially with the hint of Italian seasoning. The breast was lean and juicy but could have used more smokiness, he said.
 
Ryan absolutely adored the jalapeno and cheese sausage, though.
 
The entrée possessed the right balance of peppers, cheese and meat with each element complementing the other. He added the sausage was smoked to perfection, and after sampling a bit, I can concur.
 
While it sounds like an odd combination, the brisket and kielbasa on my sandwich worked well. The melted cheddar really melded the sandwich together, and by the time I added a touch of Dickey’s spicy barbecue sauce on top, I had an awesome sandwich.
 
I also highly recommend the baked potato casserole, which had a heart-warming and creamy blend of potato and cheese.
 
The elements of Bryan’s Beefy Mac dish, by themselves, were very good, he said. He noted the macaroni and cheese contained rich flavor and had great consistency, and a sweet barbecue sauce he added to the brisket really accentuated the meat.
 
However, the dish comes to the customer with a pile of brisket resting on top of the macaroni and cheese. Bryan said the brisket dominated the dish in this format, which is why he separated the two elements.
 
Meredith had no qualms with her selection. She noted she did not have to add salt to her potato, and the pulled pork mixed perfectly with the potato.
 
She added the sweet barbecue sauce was the best she has eaten in awhile – not overpowering with the right proportion of kick. In a show of how different palates can be, Ryan disapproved of the sweet sauce while noting the original sauce had a great blend of spices. On the other hand, the spicy was my favorite, although it is not for the faint of heart.

Since Meredith had never been to Dickey’s, she found the ordering system a bit confusing, and I agree. You actually place your order with the people cutting the meats on one side of the lunch counter then pay at the cash register at the other end.
 
The format is common to sandwich shops and a certain higher-end quick-service Tex-Mex chain, but I have only seen it once (in Texas) at a barbecue restaurant. Some signage would improve this aspect.
 
Other than that, the food was promptly served and the staff courteous. There is not too much interaction given it is a lunch-counter style establishment.

Atmosphere
 
The aged-wood motif fits the cuisine you would expect a Southern-style barbecue restaurant to possess. Some of the walls are built to resemble a blackboard, and drawings fitting for a barbecue place adorn them.
 
Although the lighting can be a bit low for some people’s taste, I had no issues with it. The layout communicates a proper theme for the cuisine.

Dickey's Shines on Dothan's East Side

A new location is expected to open in early March at the 25th Street Shopping Center in Palmer Township.
 
Just a few miles away, the Dickey's at Park Plaza in Forks Township closed recently after less than two years of operation. Dickey's also has Lehigh Valley locations in Bethlehem and Lower Macungie Township.&nbsp;
 
Dickey's is taking over the free-standing building in the 25th Street Shopping Center that previously housed Muscle Maker Grill, and Pizza Hut before that. Workers have lately been renovating the inside of the building and installing signs.&nbsp;
 
The national barbecue chain overhauled its concept last year to appeal to millennials, and the Palmer location will reflect the new style with hardwood-style floors, chalkboard walls and plaid button-up uniforms, a Dickey's spokeswoman said. The restaurants' kitchens are now smaller to accommodate more seating: Palmer will have about 75 seats.&nbsp;
 
It's not confirmed yet whether the new Dickey's will offer free soft-serve ice cream, as some other locations do. But there will be free Wi-Fi, and Dickey's usual array of barbecued meat, smoked daily on-site. Expanded menu items include "barbecue in a bowl" options like mac and cheese with brisket, sliders and tacos.&nbsp;
 
The owner of the new Palmer Township location is Ken Lynch, who has owned a Dickey's in Stroudsburg since 2013 and wasn't involved in the closed Forks Township location. A Dickey's spokeswoman said that the company is excited for Lynch to replicate his success when the Palmer Township location opens.&nbsp;

Leading up to the opening, Dickey's will hold special promotions including giveaways of a year of free barbecue for three guests, live music and 50 percent off orders for uniformed first responders for the first four Fridays.&nbsp;
 
The 25th Street Shopping Center has been on a run of new restaurant announcements lately. A Wing Stop is now open in a corner location, and last week Adobo Latin Kitchen announced that it would start serving Puerto Rican cuisine in February.&nbsp;

Barbecue chain is opening another Lehigh Valley location

Dickey's Barbecue will be holding a fundraiser Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Dickey's Corporate has announced that they will match tomorrow's total donation.

Four restaurants in Texas will be donating 10 percent of their sales, too.

The fundraiser will be the first ever match donation corporate has ever done.

The 'Because We Care' Foundation will also be selling Trooper Weaver memorial t-shirts.

Dickey's holding fundraiser for Tpr. Weaver family

The Altoona Mirror covered the fundraiser for fallen Pennsylvania State Trooper.
Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in downtown Altoona will hold a fundraising event Saturday for the family of fallen Trooper Landon Weaver.
 
“Twenty percent of sales will go to Macy, the wife of Trooper Landon Weaver. We are also selling T-shirts with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Because We Care Foundation,” said Manager Stephanie Trude of Dickey’s at 1211 11th St.
 
The fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
 
Trooper Weaver was killed in the line of duty in Huntingdon County on Dec. 30.
 
Meanwhile, four Dickey’s locations in the Dallas, Texas, area — where Dickey’s is based — are raising funds for the Weaver family.
 
This fundraiser is the first in the Dickey’s donation matching program, intended to increase impact for individual fallen officers’ families in their time of need. Wherever Dickey’s operates, the barbecue brand said they hope to provide support for first responders.
 
“Dickey’s is proud to serve those who protect us,” Dickey’s CEO Laura Rea Dickey said in a statement. “We hope to provide support and relief to the Weaver family. While we wish tragedies like this never happen, we want to do what we can to help the Weavers and other families who may face these circumstances in the future.”
